Economic Recovery Doubled Show Effectiveness The 17th GTI Asia Taipei Expo

After the recent global financial turmoil, has the electronic game industry's spring finally arrived? Held on May 2~4 at the Taipei World Trade Center, the 17th GTI Asia Taipei Expo housed 109 exhibitors showcasing more than one thousand new products. Following the global market's defrosting, buyers' willingness to purchase has greatly increased. The 3-day event attracted approximately 3,500 buyers. The new and exciting exhibits and costly marketing campaigns staged at the show made people smell the warm air of an economic spring.

Significant growth in the number of new exhibitors
This year's GTI Asia Taipei featured a total of 109 exhibition companies.。
Entering its 17th year, the GTI Asia Taipei Expo took place at B & C Zones of Hall 1, the Taipei World Trade Center for three consecutive days starting from May 2, and ending smoothly on May 4. Jointly organized by GTI Magazine, the Taiwan Digital Entertainment Association (TDEA) and the Taiwan Amusement Machine Association (TAMA), GTI Asia Taipei Expo 2010 housed 670 stands, recording a slight growth in scale compared with last year's event.

This year's GTI Asia Taipei Expo featured 109 exhibitors. Besides local Taiwanese exhibitors, the event attracted international exhibitors including Namco Bandai and Nippo Tusho from Japan, GameArt, Karen and Universal Space from Hong Kong, British media EuroSlot and InterGame as well as companies from China, Daxing Theme Art Research Center, Dragon World, Luck & Jinying and G-Look. The exhibitors that participated in GTI Asia Taipei Expo for the first time included New Paco, Ding Xiang, TAKADEN, AExcel, Joii, Happyforever, Arichip, Feng Yi Fu, Chian, Wan Hai, Las Vegas Cabinet, New Technology, AGT and TAGHI.

After the global financial turmoil erupted in 2007, the world experienced nearly two years' economic regression. In early 2010, the global economy saw a strong recovery. According to data announced in April by the Department of Statistics, the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) of Taiwan, Taiwan's export orders in March reached US$34.39 billion, recovering to the level before the financial crisis. In particular, the orders from China, Japan and ASEAN countries recorded new historical highs, showing a clear economic recovery.

The actual evidence of an economic recovery was the number of show visitors at this year's event. Overseas buyers came from more than 30 countries and regions including Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Chile, China, Greece, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, Macau, Malaysia, Peru, the Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Singapore, Thailand, the UK and the US. Based on our initial estimate, there were 3,500 overseas and domestic professionals attending the show.

Gathering numerous guests, GTI Asia Taipei Expo robustly kicked off
Whether or not the economy has recovered can be felt from the increased visitor attendance of the GTI Asia Taipei Expo.
On the first day of the show, the opening ceremony was attended by legislator Lin Yu-fang, and Director General Yeh Yun-lung, Senior Specialist Peng Wei-yue and Division Chief Tseng Pi-yun of the Department of Commerce, MOEA as well as Chairman Li Hsiang of the Family Entertainment Development Association, Chairman Yang Wan-te of the Taiwan Amusement Center association and Chairman Wei Wen-bing of the Taiwan Gift Claim Vendor Association. These special guests added luster to the event's magnificent opening ceremony.

The opening ceremony was commenced with remarks of Chairman Ou Che-wen of TAMA and Chairman Lu Kun-mou of TDEA. Then Director General Yeh Yun-lung delivered a speech expressing his support of the amusement machine industry. Also, he hoped to cooperate with the industry to change the society's stereotyped view of arcade games and achieve the ultimate goal of promoting the industry's development. At last, all the attending guests jointly participated in the ribbon cutting ceremony to announce the official opening of GTI Asia Taipei Expo.

At this year's show, besides displaying newly developed products, many exhibitors held tournament activities and product launch conferences, which successfully drew buyers' attention and created purchase momentum.

At last year's GTI Asia Taipei Expo, IGS released Ba‧Three Kingdom War, the latest development of the Three Kingdom War series, and cooperated with Sega to penetrate into the Chinese-language market. On the opening day of this year's GTI Asia Taipei Expo, May 2, IGS announced that the company is in cooperation with Japan-based Taito and Wahlap Technology, a distributor in the China marketplace, for jointly developing new games, Anger Explosion and Music Gun Gun. IGS is responsible for the production of Chinese-language versions, which are slated to roll out in China and Taiwan in the upcoming summer.

The new product launch conference was attended by General Manager Chen A-chien of IGS Commercial Game Department, General Manager Kojima of Taito Corporation Japan, Chairman Su Ben-li of China-based Wahlap and President Masanori Ogata of Sega Taiwan. They jointly activated the cooperation ceremony. Games for trial were displayed on the site.

Besides the activities held by exhibitors, the show organizers also arranged a dinner reception of 80 tables at Banquet Hall of the Taipei City Hall on the first day of the show. Near one thousand international and domestic industry members attended the dinner function, which provided excellent networking opportunities and facilitated business cooperation.

Exciting activities and tournaments boosted game popularity

Extending from an online game to an arcade game, We Dancing Online is popular among players of all ages. The "We Dancing Online Celebrity Tournament" was again held and attracted enthusiastic participation of master players across Taiwan. After months of competition, a total of twelve participants stood out and made it to the final contest.

As for Kung Fu Ball, a sports simulation game released by Subsino, it was selected by Saint-Fun as the primary tournament game to be promoted for this year because of the 2010 World Cup fervor. The 2010 Kung Fu Ball PK Tournament officially kicked off in March and a total of 16 players were qualified for the final contest from preliminary competition in different regions.

Kung Fu Ball features an innovative gameplay which combines air hockey and hitting brick games. With strong entertainment elements and a creative concept, Kung Fu Ball has gained popularity and excellent feedback from players within a short period of time. Therefore, the 2010 Kung Fu Ball PK Tournament particularly drew a lot of attention. The top three winners were awarded with abundant prizes by the tournament organizer Saint-Fun International.

Since its debut in 2005, the China Cup-Street Basketball International officially entered its 5th year this year. Following the prevalence of basketball machines and the increase of players, this year's China Cup which featured prizes worth NT$500,000 attracted the participation of many new and old players. The final contest of China Cup was held at the GTI Asia Taipei Expo on May 2. To encourage more players to participate in the tournament, the tournament organizer especially held lucky draws to give away abundant prizes such as Wii Fit games and trendy T-shirts.

TAMA Chairman Ou Che-wen

On behalf of the show organizers, I would hereby like to thank all the attending guests for participating in this grand event on such a beautiful Sunday. It is an enormous encouragement for industry associates. This year, GTI Asia Taipei Expo has entered its 17th year. During all these times, it has done its best maintaining an industrial exchange platform, facilitating international technical exchange and observation, and boosting the level and scale of the industry.

Taiwan's electronic game industry enjoyed a prosperous development in early times. But, after the promulgation of the Electronic Game Establishment Management Regulations, the domestic environment experienced a sudden change, which caused 80% of Taiwanese game companies to turn to export markets. Today, I am honored to come to the show with Legislator Lin and Director General Yeh. We hope that through this event, all of you can have deeper understanding of the electronic game industry and learn that this industry is actually worth development and possesses great potential. We also hope for a proper liberalization of non-educational type electronic games that provide edutainment. Let's all work together for the industry's development. And finally, I wish the event will be successful and satisfactory.

TDEA Chairman Lu Kun-mou

Today, at the 17th GTI Asia Taipei Expo, I am very glad to see the attendance of Director General Yeh from the Department of Commerce, which is the governmental organ responsible for the electronic game industry. After all the efforts made by many industry peers in the past, the electronic game related regulations were finally passed. Originally, we anticipated the industry would move towards a healthy and prosperous development afterwards. However, things went against our wishes and the government's stricter management came before its active guidance. The industry that intended to advance was constrained and could not do much about the situation. Through insistence and continuous endeavor, industry members found their own space on the global stage. I have discussed with President Thomas Liu of GTI Magazine, one of the show organizers, through which we hoped to make GTI Asia Taipei Expo the largest gaming trade event in Asia. But what was a pity was that there were almost no opportunities for development in the local market, a market that is the most important to industry members. Now, the China market offers excellent conditions and an expansive marketplace, which, however, also formed a barrier that is difficult for the local Taiwan game industry to cross over. Industry members have recently thought about compiling plans about reviving the local industry, and will again propose suggestions to the Department of Commerce. I hope the responsible authority will not only consider the negative influence but also will attach importance to the various positive benefits that the game machine industry can generate.

Legislator Lin Yu-fang

Today is the opening day of the 17th GTI Asia Taipei Expo. After many industries have gradually walked out of the impact of financial turmoil, today I have noticed that the number of booths this year has seen a significant growth over previous years'. I also saw some industry professionals from Guangzhou City and Panyu District. I believe these will bring positive benefits to the game machine industry.

Electronic game machines not only attract players with pure game entertainment, but also combine advanced technologies and need the government to establish proper regulations to guide their development. The global electronic game market is enormous and contains amazing potential. Considering the achievements made by IGS and Saint-Fun International, the game machine industry is indeed an important industry worth the government's encouragement and support. Therefore, we should look at the game machine industry with a serious attitude and attach importance to the industry, and also adopt the approach of "active assistance and effective management" to guide the industry's development. Times have changed. When Singapore has liberalized casinos, why can't the Taiwan government support the game machine industry with a positive attitude? I believe governmental organizations will come to a wise decision. At last, I also wish success for the event!

Director General Yeh of the Department of Commerce, MOEA

The key to an industry's development is not the amount of the industry's production value but the society's perception of the industry. Take pool playing as an example. In the beginning, nobody thought that was a healthy sport. Nowadays, it has become an international competition activity participated by players representing their countries. I believe the same principle applies to the electronic game industry.

The MOEA is responsible for industrial policies. For the value of an industrial policy, production value and society acceptance are the most important. When an industry is not accepted by the general public, it is difficult for the industry to have further opportunities. Therefore, I will discuss with the two chairmen about the communication and coordination of opinions between the central and local governments and civil representatives. We hope to change their stereotyped views of electronic game industry and will work on gaining support of more civil representatives in order to facilitate the revision of regulation in the future. Also, we will promote educational-type games that are widely accepted by the general public and gradually change the society's view of the electronic game industry. We shall thoroughly carry out "effective liberalization and active assistance" and will no longer impose more restrictions under the name of "management".

The innovative approach of integrating electronic games with digital entertainment belongs to the aspect of digital content. We believe that the digital content industrial projects led by the Department of Industrial Technology and the Industrial Development Bureau can consolidate more resources. Let us assist the industry from the aspect of resources. If the industry can obtain support in legal aspects, we will be able to further facilitate the reformation.

Economic recovery boosted industry members' confidence
As the global economy is gradually recovering, market demand has also expanded. Accordingly, the number of new products presented at this year's GTI Asia Taipei Expo recorded a significant growth compared with previous years. A series of new product promotional campaigns during the 3-day event attracted many Taiwanese electronic and print T media and generated extensive coverage. TTV, CTV, CTS, Next TV, TPTS, CTITV, TVBS, SETTV, Era TV, ETTV, Apple Daily, Economic Daily News and United Daily all sent reporters to cover the event. Positioned as a trade event targeting the international market, GTI Asia Taipei has walked through 17 years. The transformation in exhibits and exhibitors during all these years can exemplify the efforts made by GTI Asia Taipei Expo in connecting its exhibitors with the international marketplace. The following trends have been observed based on changes in the exhibits.

I. Product differentiation
In the past, GTI Asia Taipei Expo often saw that different exhibition companies displayed similar products. However, after there were more restrictions imposed in the Taiwan market and Taiwanese companies have gradually switched to export markets, GTI Asia Taipei Expo has jumped out of the stereotyped impression that its exhibit content mainly covers Mario games and large-sized amusement machines. The event not only has preserved its primary exhibits such as gaming machines and parts, but also has experienced gradual growth year after year in the number of educational-type games.

II. Flexible order acceptance and small production
The quality of made in Taiwan (MIT) products has always been recognized by foreign companies. Faced with the emergence of China's massive production power, Taiwanese companies have adjusted their product strategies and used the approach of flexible order acceptance and small production to lay a solid foundation for "Taiwan Excellence". Taiwan's high-tech cluster effect has also happened in the electronic game industry. Many overseas buyers would take advantage of the week of GTI Asia Taipei Expo and use convenient transportation networks to travel from north to south Taiwan to purchase all the needed game machines and parts. The buyers can save a lot of precious time when checking production sites.

III. Transformation from being manufacturing-oriented to focusing on marketing and building brand and reputation
6. In view of China's step-by-step liberalization of large-scale pilot sites and the recovery in overseas markets, GTI Asia Taipei Expo's performance in the future is highly anticipated.
For raising brand awareness, many exhibitors have started using tournaments to attract fans in recent years. After all, brand building takes time. One after another promotional campaigns can strengthen the bonding between players and new products. Game developers can also evaluate the feasibility of new product releases based on the on-site popularity. Nowadays, it is no longer the era that "the master leads you to the door and the rest is up to you". "Products talk" still needs the support of marketing strategies. Game providers have attached greater importance to the annual GTI Asia Taipei Expo year after year. The event is the most direct way for game developers to face buyers. On-site talks and product introduction can facilitate buyers to place orders. Therefore, "utilizing booth decoration to compete in the hardware sector and utilizing marketing to compete in the software sector" are promotional approaches commonly seen at the event. Not including the restricted Taiwan domestic market, the arcade game market of China is growing at the annual speed of 3%, fueled by the Chinese government's active support. Currently, there are more than 20,000 game centers in China, which generate amazing production value. Plus the large-scale pilot site liberalization policy which allows the issuance of a total 30,000 licenses in all provinces of China, the China market's demand for educational-type game machines is soaring. In the last two years, the number of Chinese delegations visiting the GTI Asia Taipei Expo has significantly increased. Following the fading away of the recent global financial turmoil, the frozen market has started melting. For game companies, it is the best moment to undertake deployment for Asia and around the globe. Since its inception in 1993, GTI Asia Taipei Expo has long become the number one electronic game trade event in Asia. It has also been ranked as Taiwan's excellent export trade event many times by the Taiwan External Trade Development Council and has received extensive recognition from overseas and domestic industry associates. Faced with the future, GTI Asia Taipei Expo will continue to shoulder the important responsibilities of boosting the level of the electronic game industry, facilitating exchanges between industrial and academic sectors and creating export business opportunities. The 18th GTI Asia Taipei is slated to be held on May 5~7, 2011. We hope all industry members will support the event again.
